Barriers to adoption of GenAI remain, with concerns around the impact on jobs top of mind for more than half (56%) of respondents.

This is perhaps to be expected, as den Rooijen explains: “Since the industrial revolution people have worried that each technological leap would be accompanied by mass redundancies in the workforce, but the opposite has typically been true. The same is likely with GenAI – it’s not here to replace us, it will just move human labour up the value chain.”

56% cited concerns over quality and accuracy of GenAI as a barrier to its adoption.

While 50% said worries over security and data integrity were holding them back – a figure that rose to 83% for those in the public sector. And rightly so perhaps, as Penton suggests:

“There has been a lot of talk about hallucinations and accuracy of content, but it’s worth noting that not all inventive text is bad. In enterprise you need to control that risk all the time. LLMs are

desperate to serve, which can be their downfall, leaving them open to social engineering. The trick is context. LLMs don't tend to understand context very well so can be fooled into answering things that they shouldn’t. Having the right prompts, guardrails and good quality data is key.”

Over half of respondents (57%) say they do not have the internal skills and knowledge

to handle GenAI, an issue that 56% say is acting as a barrier to their organisation adopting the technology. Yet having that level of skills and knowledge will be essential to success as den Rooijen concludes:

“Moving forward on GenAI without the right level of understanding and knowledge could put organisations in hot water. If data is misused, or models are used to make

decisions without having the ability to explain how those decisions were made, there can be serious consequences. Equally, for some organisations, limiting skills to a select few can present a barrier to action, resulting in businesses losing out to the competition.

This leaves many organisations in a tough situation – uncertain on how to move forward, but unable to stay still.”
